A man can ride from Hell to Texas Fleeing tears and lost caresses And wake up in the morning Seems like nothing's gonna change There's a feeling just past sorrow When it seems that no tomorrow Is ever gonna shake away her memories That come flooding back today Refrain" Why did she tell him that she never should've have offered her bed? Why not just leave, why not simply say goodbye? Love changes over time, when it passes its no crime When she left, why did she have to be unkind? A man can give the best he has Blindly thinkin' it'll last Until his lover tells him that she's never planned to stay He can struggle with her reasons Recall for her their better seasons But he's talking to a wall because she's leaving And there's nothing left to say A man can ride from Hell to Texas not quite knowing what his next step is but the highways roll forever and a fiddle just might ease a worried mind A man can find the space he's needing Take his time to stop the grievin' and a Texas song'll find a way to bury all the pain he left behind

Honeysuckle Evening (June 97) The sun’s going down, it’s a honeysuckle evening Red plum sinks into blue twilight Flowing like a river, ripples spreading wide like your smile People outta talkin’, laughing with their neighbors Everybody’s feeling so fine Slidin’ like a rainbow into sweet, sweet summertime Honey wear your red dress, I like the way it drives me wild And take your good man dancin’, I want to be your sweet love child Somebody better pinch me, I think I must be dreamin’, life should always be this fine Rising with the moon in the sweet, sweet summertime The wind is singin’ through your hair as we slip into the city Drivin’ with the windows rolled down Feelin’ mighty frisky, shining like the bright lights of town Dinner in some cafe, your laughter’s my desert I’m drinking in your eyes like wine And taste a lovin’ spoonful of the sweet, sweet summertime When the music starts to playin’, it burns a hot, smouldering fire The drumbeat moves our bodies, a rocket couldn’t fly any higher The ghost of Bird’s soprano grooves us right down to the end The singer’s voice send shivers up my spine Dancing to the edge of the sweet, sweet summertime Lover, wear that red dress, I like the way you drive me wild And take your good man dancin’, then I’ll be your sweet love child Somebody’s gotta pinch me, I swear I must be dreamin’ Life should always be this fine Swingin’ from the moon in the sweet, sweet summertime

This heart of mine Is drowning in tear drops It's love is all used up You're no longer mine This heart of mine Once bloomed in your spring That no longer means anything You're no longer mine Refrain: I keep a heart-shaped box with your name In the closets of my mind And all the love I had to give Is locked up there inside Of this heart of mine I don't need a heart anymore it left with you out the door You're no longer mine This heart of mine I don't need a heart anymore It left with you out the door You're no longer mine

In the East Kentucky mountains, the rose blooms fair and sweet And the boys are drawn in droves to their petals like a bee They are drawn to those fair petals like a bee Her name was Callie Johnson, she'd travelled 'round the world But when she sang her mountain songs, she seemed a simple girl She'd sing barefoot like a simple, mountain girl A man drove from the city to breathe the mountain air He stopped in east Kentucky when he saw the mountains fair He saw that these mountains were so fair He wandered down a holler when he heard an angel sing When he laid his eyes on Callie, he swore he saw her wings He said a blind man could see that angel's wings dear maiden, I'm a rich man, I've come in my fine car I'll take you from these mountains, you'll see the world afar I'd do anything to take you 'round the world She smiled at him "You simple man, I've been to France and Spain I know the world you're speaking of, I'm happy where I am I've done Manhattan and I'm happy where I am You might be witty up in Boston or a prince in your DC But here in east Kentucky, you're just a honeybee With no more sense than a hopeless honeybee So go back to the city, I'll stay here with my kin I've had my share of city life and hopeless city men What do I need with a hopeless city man?" Well, the bees they want their honey, the birds have songs to sing You try to pluck a mountain rose, you'll only feel her sting You want her flower but you'll only feel her sting City roses grow in gardens, they'll bloom on city streets Wild roses grow just where they like and bloom just where they please Those mountain roses will bloom just where they please

Rose Hips and Roses The sky was aglow but a cold wind crept in She slips back insight and pulls on her shawl And sips on her tea as the memories begin The hard roads she's traveled, the times that she'd fall For rose hips and roses, lost hearts and lost dreams The love that she gave, the trouble she's seen Her only regret's that she's tired to the bone With her rose hips and roses, alone He was a dreamer, some say he's a fool But he fit in her life like a pair of old shoes She thought he might stay but their old souls wore through So she fed him on memories and bid him move on Now she rocks in her chair, her cat by her side Peering back through the years, til the tears start to fall She knows what she gave up, what it cost to decide Though she's not sure of why, it's enough to recall

I gave a couch to Art, he was a man of song He'd travelled many miles, seldom staying long He carried little 'cept a guitar and a hat He sang lyrics that could make you cry, get you dancing, make you wonder why You hadn't seen the way he looked at that He wasn't much for money but he didn't mind He sold a little weed and friends got him by He was never one to worry about a home Then he met Circe, she was my friend She was young and wild and something drew him in He thought he'd found the truest love he's ever known Refrain: He saw the stars roll by like diamonds She saw the moon shine just like it did back home She was an activist, she organized for the environment, for human rights They left Kansas for the Willamette old-growth trees And his poems turned to protest songs, they fought, they loved, righting other's wrongs Though each had demons waiting in the wings Circe dreamed of teaching and settling down She'd been a big city mind in a one-horse town Escaping left her with a baby girl She wasn't happy living out on the road She grew weary and her heart grew cold Nothing Art could offer fit her world He wanted stars... Circe's anger drove their friends away, it fell most on Art and the songs he made It shattered him until he couldn't sing When she left with her daughter he fell apart He couldn't go on with his broken heart Now he sees the world through thorazine He'd offered stars... So friends, when a gypsy comes around, if you want a life in your city or town You might love them for awhile but let them go For your ghosts would follow you close behind Catch up with you, just a matter of time Leave two hearts broken out along the road Let them chase stars that roll like diamonds And you'll know moons just like the ones you knew back home

Somehow those city lights grew brighter when you wed me We left our hometown, a new life to begin Now I wish that we had stayed, maybe you'd be here today Instead of honky-tonkin' round with other men Still I love you and you've never really left me Though you go out at night, you say that you're with friends I can't leave you so I stay, until I find a better way I just move over and let a new heartache move in Refrain: I believe you love me, at least you tell me you still care But maybe you just need to know I'll always be there I dream of going back to the place that we called home Someday I will, and I hope I'm not alone but time goes by and we still live this life of sin I just move over and let a new heartache move in

The chairs have been stacked and the lights have come down It's nobody's secret I'm still hanging around I try to make small talk as you pack your guitar And hope that my interest won't push you to hard And I think, am I sick with infatuation? I'm wanting to trust this to see what becomes Refrain: Of a dance by the light of the moon In slow moving circles, gently rock in my arms The sun will come up much too soon And an answer is waiting on a wished upon star For nights I have asked myself what's this about? is it the hard times you've grown through or the curve of your mouth" It all gets confused in the way that I feel Each time we're together, there's an aching so real I don't want your freedom or to make you a wife I'd just like to share some sweet gifts in our life And go dance...
9.
Refrain: You're not making me a fool, I'm fooling myself Loving you though you're in love with somebody else A fool like me don't ever learn Each time we meet my heart still yearns You're not making me a fool, I'm fooling myself My heart was yours from the first time that we met We grew close so fast, I thought our love was meant But then I saw you arm in arm with another man I pretend he's not your love, he's just a friend You told me once that you were glad we'd always be friends But what I heard was that our love would never end It's plain to anyone but me ours is not a love to be You're not making me a fool, I'm fooling myself
10.
It's not just your sweet disposition It's not the way our eyes linger awhile It's not the way our bodies tell stories That are driving me wild It's not your laughter that flows out so easy It's not your sweet curves, your wit or your smile You're like a tide that pulls deep within me You're driving me wild Refrain: When I first met you I fell under your spell When next I saw you, I said "is this love?" I've been enchanted before but this time it's more You're like a blessing from heaven above Let's share our mornings, go out in the evening If this should work we have the rest of our lives I'd like to spend some sweet time with you Driving you wild

Mandolin Blue (For Michele) Your faded shirt, early morning skies Softest of the blues in the depths of your eyes Of blue, so blue, your mandolin sang blue Your fingers poised to dance with notes along the strings Notes that spoke a heart’s pure joy, notes that spoke of pain Of blue, so blue, your mandolin sang blue When we played together, blending voice and strings The world around us fell apart, when a song means everything I still hear the notes you wrote for us, they’re etched in memory From deep within, the still, the zen, the spaces in between Of blue, so blue, your mandolin rang true Open Texas highways, bluebells stretch for miles Blue like the questions in the corner of your smile Blue, so blue, your mandolin sang blue
